Newts require basically the same care as a Fire-belly Toad except for these few things:
1) They are a lot slower and eat less. If not sure about what size crickets they can eat, go with something a bit smaller than their heads. (Toads can squish bigger prey into their mouths but newts can't.)
2)If you have a filter, they like to crawl into them or any dark place, so give them a hideout and screen-up your filter.
3) Somehow, newts can stick to the silicon sealant in glass aquariums and can get out quite easily. If you don't find them quickly, they will dry out (and die). So..... PUT A LID ON IT!
There are many types of newts, but the most common are fire-belly newts, eastern newts, etc. I'm not sure what kinds of salamanders are commonly available, but they are more aquatic. Some even have gills and never come out of the water.
